Our Guide to Lubricants

Our Guide to Lubricants

The term, “lube” is most often used for the word, “Lubricant” and both words are used interchangeably in our discussion. Lubricants are the most undervalued play accessory when it comes to sexual or intimate play. Although we can produce our own “lubricants” such as spit, vaginal fluid or seminal fluid, the fact of the matter is that those types of human lubricants aren’t as long-lasting, slippery or provide sensations that one can achieve using the lubricants readily available in the market today for sex play.

Additionally, if you are going to use various sex toys during your play, it’s important to use the proper kind of lubricant with your specific toy. So, make sure to read our guide to help you decide the proper lube to use for whatever sex play desires you may have and how to use them before buying them. Our guide will provide you with information on the various different types of lubricants, how to best use it as well as discuss common misconceptions about lubes and much more.

What is Lube or Lubricant?

A lubricant or lube is a substance that reduces friction, plain and simple. Lubricants can be a liquid that is water-based or an oil-based product. It can also be a gel or a fine carbon powder like graphite, but for our purposes & discussion, we will only deal with body-safe liquid forms of lubricants.

As we stated above, lubricants reduce friction and in doing so, it makes our body’s most sexually sensitive areas (the anus, clit, penis, nipples, tits or vagina) more slippery or wetter making our sexual play more enjoyable.

Today, we have body-safe lubes made from silicone, oil or water and some companies will mix these items creating a hybrid providing even better results for us to enjoy. To see the various lubricants we carry, please click here.

What's the Necessity for Lube?

If you want to make your sexual play time, either solo or with your partner(s), more interesting, safer, enjoyable and sexy as well, using the proper lubes can help make your experience erotically more pleasing. Additionally, using the proper lubricant with your toys will make your toys have a longer usefulness and not cause them to degrade over time.

Using today’s lubricants available from our site lasts longer than human-made lubricants as mentioned above and reduces friction making your sexually sensitive areas more reactive to sensations. It has been noted that individuals who are stressed or tired make less bodily fluids, so lubes provide that alternative slipperiness needed to enjoy sexual play. And if you are into anal sex, need we say more about the need for lubricants?

Today, manufacturers have designed flavored lubes, desensitizing lubes as well as full body massage gels for you to use and enjoy all of the pleasures derived from the use of your choice of lubricants. There are also other reasons to use a lubricant as stated below:

  • They are great for long sexual play sessions – we’re talking overtime in the game of love-making
  • They can improve and enhance sexual play – who doesn’t want that?
  • They can help you achieve better and longer orgasms, maybe even more of them too!
  • They decrease friction making it easier to penetrate and thrust into the vagina or anus
  • And speaking of anus, don’t leave home with out your lube, if you get our drift
  • Some provide delicious flavors to savor along those labia or his shaft and some leave you tingly in those areas of use
  • When your lover gives you a warmed oil full body massage, you’ll feel like you are getting a special spa treatment

Types of Body-Safe Lubes along with Safety & Cleaning Tips

There are four main types of body-safe lubricants, each having their own characteristics and use. They are as follows:

  1. Water-based Lubes
  2. Oil-based Lubes
  3. Silicone Lubes
  4. Hybrid Lubes

Additionally, as mentioned above, many manufacturers mix any of these listed here together creating a hybrid having both the benefits of each of them without any downside to them.

When choosing a lube for use with your toy(s), remember that like materials (like a silicone toy and silicone lube) do NOT go together contrary to what you may be thinking because the lube will actually degrade the toy over time. So, just like magnets, “opposites attract”.

However, in the example above, a hybrid of silicone and water can be used with a silicone toy as we said regarding getting the shared benefits of each lubricant without the shared downsides of each lube.

Water-based Lubes

Water-based lubricants can be used with all of your sexual desires whether it be self-masturbation, penetrative sex with a partner or your toy and is the safest, most versatile lube to use.

The Why’s for Water-based Lubricants

  • Obviously, it’s easy clean-up with just soap and water
  • Can be used with any type of condom, latex or non-latex
  • Because it’s water-based, it won’t stain your sheets or other materials
  • Water-based lubricants are “toy-safe” or “toy friendly” so you don’t have to worry about ruining your toys

Safety, Use & Cleaning Tips

  • You shouldn’t use water-based lubes in the shower, tub, pool or jacuzzi because the lube will immediately become diluted and not perform well
  • When it’s hot and dry where you are, water-based lubricants will dehydrate sooner than normal causing you to have to reapply it more often
  • Water-based lubricants clean-up with soap and water
  • Water-based lubes won’t soil your sheets or other materials and will simply wash out

Silicone-based Lubricants

Because of the physical nature of silicone, silicone-based lubes are thicker in viscosity, are a great lubricant that last longer than a water-based lube.

The Why’s for Silicone-based Lubricants

  • First and foremost, silicone is hypoallergenic, meaning that it has little likelihood of causing an allergic response
  • Silicone-based lubes are safe to use with condoms
  • It’s great for using with glass, steel or plastic toys
  • Its lubricity lasts a long time so the need to reapply is minimal
  • It’s great to use for masturbation

Safety, Use & Cleaning Tips

  • Because it’s silicone-based, it can not be used with silicon toys
  • Silicone-based lubricants are difficult to clean up requiring a lot of soap and water. You might want to use rubbing alcohol on harder surfaces first to dilute the silicone lubricant
  • For fabrics, gently rub the soap in, let it sit, then wash with a mild detergent. For a stain, rub the soap into the fabric with your fingers or a soft cloth to help break down the silicone and the let the soap sit on the stain for 10-15 minutes. For tougher stains, use a degreaser designed for laundry

Oil-based Lubricants

Household oil-based lubricants such as baby oil, mineral oil or petroleum jelly can degrade and cause latex condoms to breakdown. Even oils used in the kitchen like olive oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil or other plant-based oils can do the same.

The Why’s for Oil-based Lubricants

  • Oil-based lubricants are extremely slippery
  • They last much longer and do not need reapplying often

Safety, Use & Cleaning Tips

  • Oil based lubricants are best used for any fisting activity. These types are typically purchased as a crème
  • Liquid form oil-based lubes are great when used for a sensual massage
  • Do not use with condoms or your little swimmers will be sure to escape
  • Unfortunately, oil-based lubricants are not hypoallergenic. In fact, they are more prone to higher rates of infection
  • Oil-based lubes cannot be used with latex diaphragms or latex toys
  • Oil-based lubricants are difficult to clean off clothing, sheets or fabric items. To clean, use baking soda to scrub with or use a concentrated degreaser made for fabric to scrub with. Allow the area to dry, then wash normally in your washer. You may try a spotting agent like Shout or several others on the stain prior to putting into the washer and use hot water to wash the stained item.

Expert Tips & Advice

Body & Toy Safe Choices: It is important that when looking to purchase any type of lubricant that you take into account body-safe choices as well as toy-safe lubricants as well. Ideally, you want paraben-free, glycerin free and petrochemical-free for the most part. Some may prefer unscented lubes as well – to each their own, right?

Additionally, you also want to purchase lubricants that are compatible with the toys you own or about to purchase as well as you don’t want the wrong type of lubricant that will degrade your toy(s) over time and need to fork out some more cash to replace them.

Why is this important or does it matter?

  • Well for one thing, parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, primarily used in cosmetics, personal care products, and foods, to prevent the growth of mold, bacteria, and yeast, thus extending their shelf life. The main concern with parabens is their ability to disrupt the endocrine system.

Due to their ability to mimic estrogen, parabens have been a subject of study for their potential link to breast cancer, although more data is needed to confirm a direct causal relationship. Additionally, research, primarily in animals, suggests parabens may contribute to fertility problems, alter menstrual cycles, affect fetal development, and potentially influence puberty onset. So, best to error on the side of caution then.

  • Petrochemicals are chemical compounds derived from petroleum (crude oil) and natural gas. You really don’t want petrochemicals spread all over your body, let alone inside of you now do you?
  • Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is a simple sugar alcohol (a polyol) that is a colorless, odorless, and viscous liquid with a sweet taste. It is naturally derived from plant oils and animal fats, or can be produced synthetically. Glycerin is widely used as a humectant, moisturizer, sweetener, and thickening agent in various products to help retain moisture.

Change things up

Want to add a twist to using lubes? Make your sex play fun with temperature play mixed in. Before starting, warm up your lube using a pot of warm water and placing your bottle of lubricant in it for about 15 minutes prior to using (you can also use a heating pad). Test it out on your wrist and adjust accordingly to your play temp that you want.

Now for you polar bears out there, try putting your lube in the freezer for about 15 – 30 minutes to get a “chilling” sensation of temperature play.

Either way, it’s your choice!

Common Misconceptions about Lubricants & FAQ's

Will lubes damage my toys?
It Depends, read our writings above where we talk about the various types of lubes and how they can be used. However, water-based lubes can be used with all toy material types and condoms.

Will Silicone lube will ruin all my sex toys?
No, unless it’s a silicone toy. Silicone lube will only deteriorate & degrade silicone toys over time and some jelly toys. It is safe to use with all other toys and condoms.

Can I use petroleum jelly as a lubricant?
Yes, and no. Technically, it is a petrochemical-based lube which means it can damage latex condoms. Additionally, it is non-hypoallergenic and thus should not be used inside the body as it can capture bacteria and increase risk of bacterial infection within the body. Also, it is difficult to clean internally with its thick jelly-like consistency.

Can I use lube for shower sex?
Yes. However, water-based lubricant will wash away quickly. It’s probably not advisable to use other types of lubes since they can fall onto the shower floor making it a hazard due to the slipperiness caused by them. It’s just not a good idea. But again, the choice is yours.

Are lubes safe to use inside of the body?
Depends on the lube. Because lubes have different chemicals in them, it’s best to read the label first and determine which ones to use and which to avoid. You will want to avoid anything that contains the chemical nonoxynol-9. Controversial research has suggested that it has been known to increase the risk of HIV when tissue and membranes are exposed to it. Nonoxynol-9 is commonly used in anti-spermicides.

Is lube a spermicidal?
Not exactly. Only lubes that specifically indicate on their label that they are also an anti-spermicide or contain the chemical nonoxynol-9 in them help prevent pregnancy. However, controversial research has suggested that it has been known to increase the risk of HIV when tissue and membranes are exposed to it and can cause inflammation.

Will lube stain my clothing or the fabric on my furniture?
It depends on the lube. If this is a major concern about stains, we suggest that you stick to water-based lubricants. Other lubes can stain clothing or fabric. Oil-based lubes are the hardest to clean, with silicone-based the next most challenging type to remove from clothing or fabric.

Water-based lubes get sticky and don’t last long.
Yes, and no. Just like with any product, check the ingredients in any lube before using it because not all lubricants are made equally by the different manufacturers. Most water-based lubes do dehydrate quicker than other types however, you can rehydrate it by adding a little water or spit to help rehydrate the lube if you don’t want to use more.

Can STD’s / STI’s spread through lube?
Always wear a condom if it’s unclear if either partner has a sexually transmissible infection. One train of thought is that using lubricants can actually help prevent the risk of some STI’s in the sense that it reduces the risk of tearing the membranes and / or lining of the vagina or anus. But there’s no guarantee and it’s ONLY reducing the risk, NOT eliminating it, so why chance it? Using an anti-spermicidal lubricant without a condom, will only affect the sperm cells for the moment, but will begin to damage the lining of the vaginal walls over time, thus increasing the risk of contracting an STI’s such as HIV.

Coconut oil works as a natural lube.
Yes, and no. Coconut oil, like so many other plant-based oils can be used as a lubricant however it / they could disrupt vaginal pH levels and trap bacteria leading to infection and then transferred to a partner.

Does using lubricant mean something is wrong with me?
Emphatically no! Using lubricants are a personal choice for everyone. One purpose for using a lube is to produce enough wetness or slipperiness to enjoy their sexual play better. Others use a lube because they simply can’t make enough moisture on their own to enjoy their play over extended periods of play. There are numerous factors that can contribute to this such as hormonal changes that comes with menopause or hormone treatments, new medications, stress, your body is exhaustion or dehydrated, or any other number of physical or medical reasons that could affect a person’s inner chemistry.

Lube is only used for anal sex.
Totally false. Lubricants are great for vaginal, anal or oral sex helping individuals enjoy better sexual play all around. Additionally, they are great even if you are using them by yourself to help masturbate. Plus using the correct lubricant with your toy(s) will make that experience even better, we are most certain. So, lube on!

We don’t need no stinking lube if we’re turned on enough!
Really? That’s your attitude? Ever hear about individuals being highly aroused but have a chemical imbalance making it difficult to produce enough lubricity on their own? Or, how about the doorbell just rang changing the mood after going to see that the UPS driver just left you a package. The point is that there are many reasons using lube could be helpful. Think about it. Why does a guy need Viagra and sometime he doesn’t? Everybody is different. There is nothing wrong with using lube – make sex fun for everyone involved!
